Can my Bumper be Repaired?
A Bumper is Important; Does it Need Replaced?
Being rear-ended is the most common type of traffic accident. But it doesn’t always happen on the road. In fact, much of the time it happens in the parking lot. Too often people panic and they leave the scene instead of leaving a note. Now you’re stuck with a broken bumper that you have to replace; and even with insurance it’s going to cost you your deductible. The question is: when you discover that your bumper has been rear-ended, do you have it replaced, or just have it repaired (or maybe even leave it and do nothing)?
Many auto body shops will recommend replacement because they’ll make more money from it. Plus, it’s not unusual for repair to take longer to finish than replacement. But while there are cases when there is no other choice but to have your bumper replaced, there are also many instances when repair will be sufficient.
Replacing or repairing your bumper will depend on the extent of damage it has suffered. The damage may be a scratch, a dent or a crack. The more serious the damage, the more likely it will be necessary to have it replaced. Here at A & D Auto Body, we strive to be the best auto body shop in Bozeman. And that means that we do everything the right way because it’s the right thing to do.
When Repair is Sufficient
If your bumper has just incurred minor scratches or minor dents, the solution will be to have your bumper repaired. Dents can easily be pulled out and scratches can be rinsed off, scrubbed, wiped, sanded or covered up.
The cost of repair will depend on several factors including the extent of the damage, the make and model of your car (because this is the basis for the material and paint color of your bumper), and the shop where you’ll have the repair done.
When Replacement is Necessary
If your bumper suffered a major dent or a crack, the impact goes beyond more than just aesthetics or the appearance of your car. With a crack, your bumper’s structural integrity will be weaker, which means it won’t be able to provide maximum protection in case you get into another accident. If the crack happens to get bigger or even cause partial detachment, it might lead to some parts being exposed to the elements which may in turn cause rust and further damage.
Because a crack generally can’t be fixed, this necessarily means that you will need to have your bumper replaced as soon as you can.
It makes sense to assume that a new bumper will cost more than a repaired bumper. That may not be the case. There are times when the cost of repair is actually higher than the cost of replacement. Sometimes, when the damage is too severe, even if it can be repaired, the length of time it takes to do so might cause you more in terms of inconvenience than simply having it replaced.
Before making a final decision on whether your damaged bumper needs repair or replacement, consider all the factors involved so you can choose the better solution. When you bring your vehicle to A & D for an estimate, ask about all of the options.
